3-D scanners for seeing-eye industrial robots
When machines look very closely
Using a 3D scanner based on light field technology, robots may soon be able to see better than humans
In the manufacturing sector, the work done by human hands is irreplaceable to this day. Even simple tasks are difficult for robots to solve – because they act blindly or at least in a visually impaired way. The 3D scanner from the start-up HD Vision System aims to change this. It works not with laser, but with light field technology. The multi-camera system and a special algorithm could make robots see more precisely than humans in future – down to the tiniest unevenness in car paint or biscuit glaze. The project opens up further production areas for automation and offers new opportunities for collaboration between man and machine as part of Industry 4.0.
