Agrophotovoltaics – resource-efficient land usage
Solar energy on top, lettuce on the bottom
In a Living Lab, research partners test how agriculture can be practiced under photovoltaic modules
Where today solar installations stand on fields, in the future chickens can romp around and potatoes or lettuce can grow. The advantage: If valuable farmland is used doubly, less space is needed. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE will test how this can work at Lake Constance starting in the autumn of 2016, together with partners from agriculture and science as well as residents of the region. The photovoltaic modules are attached to a steel construction at a height of five metres, enabling vegetables to grow below them and tractors to bring in the harvest.
