An artists' village as power plant
Art meets wind energy
Artists are developing aesthetic models for energy production that are fuelling debate about green electricity in the country
Wind power plants and river terraces are characteristic features of many rural regions – often to the detriment of citizens, who see them as a burden. In Schöppingen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, artists at the Kraftwerk Künstlerdorf are developing models that can generate energy and at the same time are aesthetically appealing. For example, an installation generates energy from vegetables and simultaneously creates astonishing sounds. Or a turbine on whose wings a jumping stag can be seen, similar to a flipbook. These are just two of many ideas that show that energy generation does not have to be viewed only from functional standpoints.
