In large parts of Africa there are no banks. Farmers and small entrepreneurs take out loans from micro financial institutes. But the latter mainly work on the basis of paper and can have difficulty identifying customers due to the absence of forgery-proof identity cards. The lenders insure the resulting defaults with high interest rates upwards of 60%. To solve this problem, the start-up BCB equips the micro financial institutes with a tablet-based, mobile IT solution that enables employees to record every customer contact digitally. Identification is carried out by means of fingerprint scanners. The result: greater transparency, a lower risk, and affordable loans.
