City-Country-Network - water, power, gas, and the Internet on one line
One trench, five lines
A central line route for water, energy, and communications is a lifeline for a rural region
It is the backbone of a unique, Germany-wide infrastructure project with which the Landwerke Eifel seeks to make the Westeifel region fit for the future: an 80 kilometre long trench from the Oleftalsperre to Trier, via which in future one-tenth of the area of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate is to be supplied with drinking water. On top of that, in the trench alongside natural gas, biogas, and electricity lines, fibre-glass cables will be laid. The latter will provide some 27,000 households with high-speed Internet connections and simultaneously form the basis for intelligent links between energy producers and consumers.
