Climate-friendly fuel from biowaste

Waste as a source of energy

A city obtains biogas from its residents’ organic waste

60,000 tons of biowaste are produced each year in the German capital, a substantial amount that can be used sustainably. Recently the Berliner Stadtreinigung, Berlin’s municipal cleaning service, began operating a modern biogas facility. When the organic waste ferments, biogas is produced which after being treated is fed into the natural gas network. The waste fleet also benefits from this, as 150 gas-powered garbage trucks use this fuel. Thus not only the organic waste, but half of Berlin’s entire waste is collected in a climate neutral way. Thanks to the biogas facility, 2.5 million litres of diesel and 12,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions can be saved each year.
