Connected Drones – Making drones visible in air traffic

Connected Drones is a project that integrates drones into air traffic via the mobile network, and enables the control of drones outside the pilots’ range of vision.

Controlling drones that are out of sight: The UTM system – an air traffic management system for unmanned aviation in near-ground airspace – makes it possible.
To this end, drones are equipped with a specially developed GPS module and a mobile radio transmitter unit. The „flying smartphones“ log into the mobile network and transmit their position data to the UTM system. The system records the position of the drones and displays them and their flight paths in an air position display. Other nearby air traffic is also indicated. It also warns of possible conflicts and indicates areas that must not be flown into, for example near an airport.
The UTM system can warn air traffic controllers of conflicts with unmanned air traffic. Drone pilots receive the information from the UTM system via a web interface and can then control and manage their drone flights automatically using a tablet or smartphone.
Connected Drones enables the safe operation of drones out of sight of their controller, and creates the prerequisites for making full use of the many possible applications of drones.
