Devastating storms or torrential rains: above all in developing countries people struggle with the effects of climate change. They are helpless without humanitarian aid. But it often comes too late. The new approach of the initiative Forecast-based Financing: to help before the catastrophe occurs. In a first step, the initiative uses cutting-edge methods to predict extreme weather conditions in the short, medium, and long term. If storms or heavy rain are expected, the helpers provide residents in threatened areas with money for supplies and waterproof clothing in advance. With the project, the German Red Cross and the German Federal Foreign Office are closing a gap in humanitarian aid.
