Demographic change is presenting challenges to rural communities, ranging from vacant buildings to insufficient shopping possibilities. The citizens of Laubach Freienseen recognized the problem and took things into their own hands. On a volunteer basis, they are converting the former village smithy into a multifunctional multigenerational house: with care facilities, assisted living units, a cafe, and a village shop. The joint promotional association also organises parties and cooperates closely with the local school and kindergarten. As a result, the smithy will become a meeting place for residents of all ages.
