e-Installation – virtual space for media art

Wearing data goggles in a virtual museum

Telepresence technologies enable researchers to create a digital Noah's Ark for media artworks

Video and sound installations, computer-controlled objects in movement - media artworks often challenge all of the viewer's senses. But unlike two-dimensional paintings, they need a lot of space and so they are seldom included in permanent exhibitions. Art historians and computer scientists from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology are working on digital methods of preserving such artworks for posterity. To this end, telepresence technologies such as data goggles can to be used, enabling interested people around the world to visit the installations virtually and experience them in 3D at any time and place.
