Ecosia - the search machine that plants trees
When Web searches plant trees
A free search machine turns its users into digital environmentalists
Surfing the Internet and helping the environment? The search engine Ecosia, which is based on Yahoo and Bing technologies, makes it easy for users to promote sustainability. The company seeks to counter worldwide deforestation and plant one billion trees by 2020. Anyone who uses Ecosia helps plant trees with each query. Users do not incur any costs; the donations stem from advertising income from search notices. Each month, at least 80 percent of the earnings surplus is allocated to an afforestation project in Burkina Faso. Municipalities and local business in the country benefit.
