FOVEA – photo-optic surveying app
Tree inventory via mobile phone
A smartphone app makes it easier for researchers to gauge the volume and quality of harvested timber
Dozens of tree trunks are piled up in the forest. Measuring them is a labourious task for foresters, shipping companies, and sawmills. They usually still measure by hand. With a novel app developed by the start-up FOVEA for smartphones, the calculation takes only a few minutes. One photo suffices to calculate the volume based on the area. Cubic metres and strength class can also be determined swiftly with a click. Thus the app speeds up working processes and shows how a traditional branch of industry can benefit by being open to new technologies.
