The „Forum Freie Lastenräder“ consists of more than 60 initiatives all over Germany that facilitate free cargo-bike rentals. They promote the notion of communal goods, and seek to promote neighbourly cooperation and shared responsibility. Based on this communitarian idea, wielebenwir e.V. has developed the concept and created the necessary tools for dissemination. It provides digital tools that make the lending process as easy as possible for end users and initiatives, and facilitates the development of an ever-growing network. Initiatives that wish to provide alternative, environmentally friendly transport solutions free of charge can use the open-source software, which coordinates the rental of more than 130 cargo bikes to close to 10,000 users. Unlike rental portals, the individual initiatives thus have the opportunity to develop a website with their own branding, which is then perceived as a local actor. An online knowledge database and a Germany-wide network provide support in the implementation process.
