Freshness index - a shelf-life indicator for food
Too good for the rubbish bin
A freshness index calculates the real shelf life of foods so they don't end up in the garbage
Around eleven million tonnes of food go to waste in Germany each year. Much of it is still edible but is thrown away because the official "best before" date has been exceeded. The cloud-based technology of the start-up tenso determines how fresh meat and co. really are. The basis for the index are wireless sensors that monitor the storage temperature, or cooling data already available in the supply chain. As a result, consumers know the real shelf life and retailers don't have to dispose of as much food. The freshness index makes the supply chain more transparent and the food industry more sustainable.
