Germany’s humming! Doing something for the bees
Bees as ambassadors for more urban nature
An initiative is motivating citizens to create new habitats for wild bees and honeybees in urban areas
Pesticides, monocultures, and bottle tops endanger wild bees and honeybees in many places. With the “Germany’s Humming!” initiative, the Foundation for People and the Environment shows how municipal authorities and citizens can create habitats for these important pollinators. For example, people in positions of authority in politics, culture, the Church, science, and education can make their property and buildings available. So far, honeybees have found an urban home on top of Berlin Cathedral and on the roof of the Neue Pinakothek museum in Munich. Through such effective media campaigns the initiative is drawing attention to the great importance and biological diversity of bees and inspiring people to act on their behalf.
