GETAWAY has developed an app solution that lets individuals use their smartphone to spontaneously hire or rent out privately owned cars that are not in use. The company’s technical team equips participating cars with the GETAWAY SafetyKit – a one-time procedure – to ensure easy and secure processes for the vehicle owners and users. Thus equipped, the car can be switched to car-sharing mode using one’s mobile phone for any length of time while it is parked. During the activated period, verified and insured users can use their mobile phone to unlock it and start driving immediately, at a price per kilometre set by the car owner. The car keys and fuel card are in the glove compartment. The rental must be completed before the end of the car-sharing period at the original pick-up location. GETAWAY caters for all car owners who care about the environment but still enjoy driving a car. Because every efficiently used car can compensate for the demand for as many as 20 conventional passenger cars (Bundesverband Carsharing, 2017), and thus alleviate the scarcity of parking long-term. At the same time, spontaneously available and shared vehicles lessen the incentive to buy one’s own car, and increase the diversity of the local transportation network.
