GPS pasture management system
Herding cows via smartphone
An animal tracking system facilitates shepherds' work and encourages farming in mountain pastures
A mobile phone sounds the alarm: a cow has moved too far away from the mountain pasture area or has gotten lost. To notice things like this, shepherds normally have to check their herds regularly. If an animal disappears, they have to look for it, which takes time. The “GPS pasture management system” that the Bavarian Agricultural Research Institute in Freising is developing for smartphones aims to make shepherds’ work easier and thus secure the future of alpine pasture management. What is more, the system will provide information about over- and under-grazing and report when animals are in danger, ill, or ready to mate.
