Interdisciplinary Forum Neurourbanistics: Mental health & the city
Do cities make you ill? / Are cities hazardous to your health?
Neuroscientists and urbanologists jointly develop solutions to counter urban stress
By 2050, 70 percent of the world’s population will live in urban areas. At the same time, big-city dwellers have an increased risk of suffering from a mental illness. Can urban stress cause schizophrenia or depression? And how does this stress arise? Researchers and practitioners from architecture, urban planning, sociology and neuroscience identify risk groups that are particularly hard hit by urban stress and develop solutions to strengthen city dwellers’ mental health. Approaches that prevent the social isolation and fragmentation of urban societies – for greater social cohesion in cities.
