Jänschwalde – greening of open-cast mine areas
New life in old mines
Along with local farmers, a company greens former coalmines with plants from the region
Flowering meadows instead of brown coal: In Jänschwalde, former coalmines are being converted into blossoming biotopes. Since 2009, the operator Vattenfall has brought a fallow area the size of 1,700 football fields back to life. In cooperation with the company Nagola Re and local farmers, Vattenfall developed an innovative concept. The seeds for greening the areas do not come from wholesalers but are obtained from bordering grasslands. The latter are mowed and the cut grass is subsequently spread over the uncultivated land. Within two years, a new home for wildflowers and insects emerges.
