Knowledge power plant ECOhydro
All clear for finned animals
Researchers have developed a hydroelectric power plant that works quietly, almost invisibly, and in a fish-friendly way
Hydraulic power is good for the climate - but bad for fish. Since safeguards such as grates or sieves are usually absent power plants become death traps for finned animals: many perish in turbine blades. But researchers at the Technical University of Munich have developed a facility that protects the enviornment and that could open up new possibilities for water power. Unlike at usual plants, the turbines and generators are located in a shaft under the riverbed. This makes the power plant invisible, quiet, and fish-friendly. And part of the water can flow away offering fish free and above all safe passage.
