LEGO Bridge Wuppertal
Bridge art brightens up grey architecture
A concrete bridge makes a city district more colourful thanks to an extraordinary design idea and dedicated citizens
People driving on Schwesterstrasse in Wuppertal might think they are moving below huge toy building blocks. In reality, the LEGO blocks were sprayed onto the concrete by the artist Martin Heuwold. The project was realized in 2011 by the citizens’ initiative WUPPERTALBEWEGUNG e. V., with the city’s approval and sponsoring support. The first bridge of its kind in the world has since enlivened the streetscape and helped enhance the residential feeling in the city district. The idea has inspired graffiti artists to create numerous huge artworks in Wuppertal, which are held in high regard in Germany and abroad. In 2012, the project won the German Facade Award.
