Leuphana University – sustainable drug design
Green chemistry for clean water
Scientists design biodegradable medicines with the help of computer-assisted processes
Whether it's hormones, antibiotics, or painkillers: in rivers there is residue of medicines that can be detrimental to the health of people and animals. The Institute for Sustainable Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry of Leuphana University is researching methods that make it possible for antibiotics & co. to be decomposed by bacteria in the environment after they leave the patient's body. As a result, this method opens up new ways of, say, curbing antimicrobial resistance. With the help of 3D models and computer-assisted processes, the scientists create fitting molecular variants that are subsequently manufactured and tested.
