“Lively learning about the country” teaching concept
Barns as classrooms
Teaching at farms, male and female farmers get young people interested in country life and work
The general public does not know enough about agriculture, and fewer and fewer people can appreciate the work of farmers. A project launched by the Protestant Rural Youth Academy in Altenkirchen in the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate is making an effort to change the situation. It trains farmers in agricultural education and helps them develop educational offers together with schools and parishes. The goal is to give children and youth practical insight into agricultural work. Additionally, the initiative raises awareness of the importance of farming and in some cases even arouses an interest for agricultural professions.
