Multaka: meeting point museum - refugees as guides in Berlin museums
Tracking down common roots
In museums, refugees from Syria and Iraq discover parallels between their old and new homes
While mass exodus, wars, and reconstruction belong to Germany's past, they are everyday realities in Syria and Iraq. Multaka revolves around cultural and historical links between Germany and the two countries. The project trains Syrians and Iraqis to be museum guides who can give other refugees tours of Berlin institutions. Visitors and guides talk in Arabic about their old homes and approach their new one by tracing cultural and historical similarities. Workshops with a German-speaking audience raise both sides' awareness of respectful cooperation.
