munevo DRIVE – Intelligent wheelchair control via smart glasses
Just nod and drive off: A smart-glasses application opens up new possibilities for controlling electric wheelchairs. In the future, munevo aims to become an everyday assistant that helps those affected to lead a more self-determined lives.
Diseases such as paraplegia or multiple sclerosis can severely restrict a person’s freedom of movement and the independence associated with it. Those affected often depend on electric wheelchairs to remain mobile in everyday life. But not everyone is able to control them manually. Some users then require a special control system, but this has hardly changed in the past 20 years.
With munevo DRIVE, a smart-glasses application allows the user to control the wheelchair by head-movement. The application uses the sensor technology built into smart glasses to translate head movements into control signals. These signals are transmitted to the control unit of the wheelchair by means of an adapter, causing the wheelchair to move in the desired direction. In addition, smart glasses can be used to send an emergency call signal or to take and send a photo. A Bluetooth interface enables communication and interaction with other devices, such as smart phones or robot arms. Implemented software ensures data security and protects against hacking.
