Coffee-to-go is practical but burdens the envronment and wastes raw materials. Almost three million disposable cups end up in the garbage in Germany each year - or on the street. RECUP demonstrates that takeaway coffee can be sustainable. In Rosenheim, the start-up launched a deposit system for returnable cups and formed a network of cafes and bakeries that uses them. Consumers can pay a deposit on the cups and return them elsewhere. RECUP ensures that the cups are cleaned and distributed, and that the deposit is paid back. The company's open-minded approach has paid off: the system works so well that RECUP is already expanding.
