Remote-controlled mini helicopters support rescue forces in disaster operations
Flood disasters in urban areas pose many questions to relief forces: Are buildings in danger of collapsing, are people stuck inside them? The quadrocopter, a remote-controlled mini helicopter, enables rescue workers to get a quick overview. It sends aerial photographs and looks for missing people with a thermal imaging camera. Its sensors can also analyse building damage, and so when the rescuers arrive they already have a picture of the situation. The aircraft, which was developed within the framework of a research project, can also be used in industry: the quadrocopter can check wind turbines for damages without the help of climbers.
