Renewable Wilhelmsburg climate protection concept
A city district becomes climate neutral
With 100 per cent renewable and locally produced energy, a city district learns how to take care of its own energy needs
More than half of the world’s population lives on just two per cent of the earth’s surface and, according to a study conducted by the UN Climate Council, is responsible for 80 per cent of the carbon-dioxide emissions. The International Building Exhibition wants to make the Hamburg district of Wilhelmsburg climate neutral through renewable and locally produced energy. For example, a flak bunker ruin was converted into an eco power plant and a landfill into an Energy Hill with wind turbines. Residents and investors are given advice about new buildings or refurbishments and are provided with financial support. The goal is for the district to supply its own heat and electricity by 2050.
