Sectio Chirurgica: university medicine in live digital classes

Learning from surgeons online

Online lectures from operating rooms provide medical students with practical knowledge

How does the gastro-intestinal tract work? Which blood vessels supply the brain? Via an online platform of the Institute of Clinical Anatomy and Cell Analysis at the University of Tübingen, students tune into a digital operating theatre. In a course called Sectio Chirurgica, experienced surgeons show the close connection between anatomy, surgery, and radiology. Thanks to modern camera techniques, the course is shown live on the Internet. Viewers’ questions are answered immediately in live chats. What used to be only accessible to a small circle of people can now be seen by a quarter of all medical students in Germany.
