For online petitions, it is important that behind every supporter is a person and not just an anonymous mouse click. The combination of user name and password, common with many other applications on the Web, is not ideal for this purpose. To remedy the situation, a new function was added to the petition portal of the German Bundestag. It enables users to register with the help of the new German identity card permitting them to submit or support and discuss petitions. Hence the ID becomes a signature and that makes it easier for people to become politically involved.
