Synagogue at the Weinhof in Ulm
Return of a house of worship
A new synagogue was built in the middle of the city
2012 saw the opening of a new synagogue at the Weinhof across from world-famous Ulm Cathedral. The synagogue was designed as a 17-metre-high cube and its smooth limestone surface is adorned with windows in the shape of the Star of David. Situated in the heart of town, the building created by Cologne-based Kister, Scheithauer, and Gross architects has paved the way for integration of the Jewish community in Ulm. While the synagogue destroyed by the Nazis in 1938 was located at the edge of the square, the new Jewish house of worship is at the centre of urban planning.
