Tactonom – tactile graphics display for blind people
A touching connection
The new tactile graphics display gives blind people access to the digital world
Blind people mainly rely on their sense of touch when they explore things. This is problematic in the digital world. Using tables, virtual city maps, or graphics has been unthinkable for the blind until now, at least without help from people who can see. The Tactonom, the novel graphics display that blind people can touch to get information, frees them from this dependency. On a surface in DIN-A4 format, with 10,500 tactile points, users can learn things worth knowing with their fingers. Thus the new technology enables blind people to engage in a kind of digital exchange that did not exist previously, boosting their opportunities on the labour market.
