The ETA factory: energy efficenty weiter gedacht
Keeping tabs on electricity guzzlers
Researchers are testing how factories can be energetically optimised, from the machines to the buildings
29 percent of the energy used in Germany is consumed by industry. In a model ETA factory, scientists at the Technical University Darmstadt are investigating how electricity and heat can be optimally harnessed in production. They are examining the whole system, including the building envelope. For example, waste heat generated by a machine is passed on and used by the next machine. Surplus energy is used in the summer to cool and in the winter to heat the factory hall. So that the insights gained can be put into practise as quickly as possible, around 35 partners from industry and research institutes are involved in the project.
