Thermal battery that stores heat
Homemade heat
A university develops a battery that makes mini combined heat and power units for private households more efficient
With their own mini cogeneration unit single-family and multi-family houses can generate electric themselves inexpensively and at the same time use the thermal energy to heat their homes. Until now, there has been a lack of compact and low-loss storage options for heat energy. Leuphana University in Lüneburg is working on a solution: the “thermal battery”. Salts inside the battery serve as a storage medium, yielding water when heat is applied and releasing heat when water is provided. The new method is an important step towards independent decentralized heating in the city of the future.
