Thriving Green – Spirulina farming in East Africa

Tiny plant, great expectations

To combat hunger, students in Kenya are building algae farms and training local people in their cultivation

It’s small, green and comes from the sea. For the Regensburg-based start-up Thriving Green, this makes the microalga spirulina the perfect weapon in the fight against malnutrition in Turkana, one of the poorest and driest regions of Kenya. Heat, negligible rainfall, and salty groundwater make agriculture impossible. However, these are favourable conditions for spirulina, which is touted as a superfood due to its high protein and vitamin content. The student initiative takes advantage of this to build and manage algae farms together with the local population. Thriving Green combats hunger, gives people a new, sustainable livelihood – and connects different worlds.
