Development research using smartphones
African farmers use an app to keep a diary of their everyday lives for research purposes
How can smallholders in Zambia increase their income? How can their workload be reduced? To find answers to these questions, the University of Hohenheim and Stuttgart Media University have developed an image-based app that farmers can use to record their activities in real time. 60 icons for activities such as sowing, ploughing, but also doing nothing or eating, allow them to keep a diary of their daily routine even without being able to read and write. The aim is to initiate development projects based on sound data – an idea that builds bridges between Africa and Europe.
