University Hospital Saarland – cross-generational palliative ward
Last refuge for old and young
On a palliative ward an interdisciplinary team looks after terminally ill children and adults
With this ward the Saarland University Hospital has entered new territory: it is the first hospital ward in Europe to open its doors to both young and older people. The otherwise usual separation of children and adults is consciously refrained from. The doctors, nurses, and therapists in the ward see nothing that speaks against the mixed-age approach. Instead of isolating them, the joint care brings together old and young, patients and loved ones. This promotes exchange and helps rid death of taboos.
