Urban solar cloud
As climate change arrives, cities are getting hotter and hotter. Architects of the University of Kassel, Germany, offer a sustainable solution to this dilemma: the "Solar Spline" project. The ingenious design for sun protection in urban areas not only provides shade, it also produces clean energy for the city. Based on the typology of a traditional sun sail, the "Solar Spline" is composed of 300 printed photovoltaic modules. These are integrated into a resource-conserving, ultra-light construction. The result is a three-dimensional, seemingly free-floating solar cloud, whose photovoltaic cells may follow the sun's course. Shadow-provider, energy generator, architectural highlight: the Solar Spline will make our cities more appealing for the future.
